I would try using black pipe (that's ungalvanized & cheaper) which you can 
thread & then screw into a flange which you can attach to a plywood base. 
If you don't have access to plumbing tools, like a threader or pipe cutter, 
wherever you purchase the material from does.  You can choose from a variety 
of diameters.
