Why go through the trouble of threading, and cutting metal, when you can get 
it already made, at the hardware store?

Maybe my writing wasn't clear enough. I did not know the proper name for the 
part that goes on the wooden base. Now I researched it, and it's called a 
"Pipe flange".

With this, and a pipe of proper size and thread, which I get at the same 
store, all you need is 4 screws to assemble it.
