Best focus for us comes from unfrosted incandescent bulbs, which will 
keep a figure in focus through greater depth.  If you're using 
regular shadow puppets held against the screen, that's not an issue 
for you.  We've often used live dancers or 3-dimensional puppets in 
shadow, with moving light sources (mechanic's trouble lights with the 
grid removed, and 300w unfrosted bulbs, the intensities controled by 
dimmer).  Not clear from your description, though, whether the 
dancers are holding the lights behind the screen and then coming out 
into view, or whether they form the shadows.
