I believe the Vagabond Puppets Steve Abrams mentions were a politically active puppet troupe that, among other things, toured upstate New York in the 30s with a handpuppet show in support of farmers.  Bernice Silver wrote an article about this in Puppetry Journal in... the 1980s?  70s?  I'll try to find the article.  In the meantime, here is a link to an article from a 1939 issue of The Daily Worker about the Vagabond Puppets: http://www.peteseeger.net/DW10021939.htm.  The article says that the troupe included "Jerry Oberwager, 22; Mary Wallace, 22; Peter Seeger, 20; and Harriet Holtzman, 23."  Do any of these folks ring a bell?
