I have specialised in this area and can state that there are 153 stamps depicting puppets issued to the present date. I do have the complete listing which I have recently updated for the American Topical Association. The first puppet stamp issue was by the Japanese occupation of Indonesia in 1943 depicting a Wayang puppet. I have a block of twenty of these overprinted in 1945 for the Republic of Indonesia. The first Wayang description on a stamp was in a 1941 issue for the Nederland Indies depicting "Wayang Wong", a human puppet dance. I have always loved stamps of the Eastern Heritage. I am not sure whether Alan was referring to the mini sheet of Wayang Kulit figures being manipulated against a a cotton screen issued by Thailand. It's a great item. In Indonesia both religion and puppetry were well established in Java and Bali by the 11th century. It survived transition to Islam that occurred with the Muslim invasion of 1475. Wayang is an Indonesian and Malay word for theatre. A puppet is sometimes referred to as a Wayang. Besides being entertaining, it has a spiritual side and will often be presented at marriages, births and deaths. The performance usually commences at sunset and can last all night. I attach the cover of the current ATA Magazine 'TOPICAL TIME' which depicts puppets on stamps 'Puppets Prevail in Puppetry'. I have an illustrated article (seven pages) titled "Evolution of Puppets". I was to have brought my exhibit to their National Exhibition at Dayton, Ohio, in June but alas a medical problem has arisen which will affect my travel insurance for America. I always enjoy the participation on this site and the erudite contributions that are made. Regards to all puppeteers.
