If you want to completely avoid cracking from rolling/unrolling, avoid 
regular paints altogether.
I've seen powerful results on art "stuffed animals" that were painted with 
good quality fabric dyes.
The artists diluted the powdered dye just enough to have a liquid paint 
consistency. The fabric was slightly moistened when she needed gradients, 
and not moistened when she needed sharp brush marks.

The only bit of info that's missing for me is how she made sure the dye held 
steady.
Probably the type of dye she used. The type I used (Tintex) requires the 
fabric and dyes to stay in hot boiling water for at least 20 minutes...which 
excludes this "painting" technique.
