Subject: [Puptcrit] Goin' Commercial: hand puppets

A current paper mache student (private lessons, reccurring) turns out to be a career coach and communications teacher.
He is impressed by my work, but is even more impressed (negatively) that I'm not yet successful financially.

So he has taken me under his wing, and encourages me in the right way, to find commercial success. His advice is very good, his honesty is refreshingly brutal and he is well-connected in various fields and countries.

To put his money where is mouth is, he has ordered two hand puppets that will be the first two in my new line of commercial products. Two cute animals, made for girls. Both will have clothing, of my own creation. At 125$ each for these collectibles (sold online and at select specialty stores, no mass producing), it will be a fun challenge to do it simple and quick with a very classy finish, and still make them washable(my decision). I've yet to decide if it will be paper mache heads (with removable washable lining) or all-fabric. I have full creative freedom for these. I'm thinking to blend influences from the classy Illustrations of the past, and more contemporary sources. No flashy colors, but rather subtle, gentle and warm tones and rich textures (velvet, natural cloth, wool, felt, very limited use of pastels).

I might take a private sewing lesson to increase my speed and accuracy for small intricate items, and learn about adding trims and other decorative items in the proper way.

Should these become as succesful as I wish them to be, I might have to hire some help to make them.

The great thing is that the first two puppets will go into a wealthy French family who lives in England but has extra connections in Canada and France. I hope it will start something big.

2009 is gradualy confirming itself as what I had imagined it to be: growth into success.
