I was the stage manager for that Russian show. It was a long time ago (my first festival!) and although I remember that there were candles (tea lights?) during one secion, I don't remember the details of how it happened. I can't imagine I didn't know it was going to happen. I remember it was very important to the Russian puppeteers from an artistic standpoint. We probably told Mike O. to stay away from the show and kept the whole thing really quiet. I don't remember it feeling hazardous, but I was in the control booth. It was in a small theatre and I don't think the show drew much attention from any officials. And I don't think the puppeteers asked permission or informed anyone of the candles because it didn't occur to them to do so. Then again, I can barely remember what I had for breakfast these days.
