Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Adapting Grimm's Fairy Tales...

Your mention of this story took me aback. I thought I had truly read all of
Grimm; I even have the book in German. Please give us the title of this story.
It reminded me distantly of "Penta the Handless" -- hope I got the title
right-- from the Pentameron. Young maiden is wooed by her own brother, who
admits that he finds her hands are her most beautiful attribute. So she has her
maid cut off her hands and deliver them to him in a dish. Penta escapes and
has many adventures. In the end, of course, she gets new hands. It is certainly
one of the most amazing stories I have ever read. Probably one that can
never be made into a puppet show in these politically correct times, much like
"The Hobyahs," which involves the mutilation of a brave little dog.
Cheers,
Alice

In one particularly gruesome story, an innocent maiden lets her loving
father cut off her arms to spare him the fate of being taken away by the
devil. Which he does! Later she asks someone to strap her arms to her back,
just in case she finds a way to reattach them someday...
