Hey, the puppets look great, I'm a huge fan of the look of needle felting!
For the images, everything should be at 72 dpi and the size of the image should be the size you want it to appear. If you resize in the code, or in a program like dreamweaver, you still have that big image that takes more load time, it just displays smaller. Do your image sizing in your image editor, and if you're using photoshop, use "Save for Web" and fiddle with the settings until you get the smallest file size that still looks good. One of your images was 796 kb, it could very easily be less than 1/10th of that.
