Thank you for the replies. Yes these are the papier mache two sided puppets.  Interesting how they developed out of the mask tradition. I still have not found much info on the particular use of masks in these festivals, but will keep looking. I have been reading about the Mahashivaratri festival which indicates that the different masks represent different manifestations of Shiva. So it seems that these puppets are meant to maintain the presence of Siva during these festivals. I still feel that there is also some kind of connection with Durga, but I will continue looking. The presentation is a lecture/demo on different puppetry traditions from around the world. I talk about how some of them developed and how they are being used today. I integrate some performance with the puppets to keep things lively. It something I continue to expand and develop as I learn more about some of the traditions.
