Wow Charles, you had a lot of historical acquaintances and training opportunities! When I read about it, it almost feels like a rivetting fiction novel, such is the sheer concentration of good stuff that happened to you. I'm sorry you saw the guild you loved turn sour. I understand the warnings you gave about lending books. Should we open our library to members, we'd need to put some safeguards in place. The honor system is not the same for everyone. In fact, unreliabily is rampant, and stealing a book is considered "no big deal", as a general public notion. Still, I believe it is necessary to trust people to a certain extent. Without trust, there can be no real sharing. I was lucky to have an experienced puppeteer trust me enough to lend me his only copies of the Fettig, the Dwiggins, and another classic puppetmaking book. He was not stressed about it either, I got to keep them for a few months. To me, books are almost sacred, and if they belong to someone else, doubly so. About expressing oneself more frankkly, I totally agree. Hypocrisy is something I usually abhor. I say usually, because sometimes "faking it" is the only way to deal with certain people. And some of those certain people deserve to be "played to". Brings a strange sort of satisfaction when we pull it off, doesn't it? I'd rather be blunt and even harsh, than dishonest. It's gotten me in trouble more than a few times, as I have been known to push the envelope a bit further than what could be considered wise. Age has mellowed me, and I rarely tresspass as much as I did back when I was a teenager. I loved the "grandfather and wooden bowl" story you shared with us. Great example of the surprising amount of wisdom a child can posess. Was it based on a true story? _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Admin interface: http://lists.puptcrit.org/mailman/listinfo/puptcrit Archives: http://www.driftline.org
