Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Chez Motel!

Since our Chez Motel host Hobey asked,
here are some quick and easy healthy recipes:

RAW PUREE
Sweet and delicious. Good snack, or healthy dessert.
Bring a grater and turn veggies and fruits into yummy raw purees!
Choose veggies and fruits that are easier to keep for a few days, in case
you don't get access to a fridge. My favorite is: One carrot and one apple.
If I don't eat it immediately, I add lemon juice and blend well. Pinch of
sea salt is optional.

HEALTHIER POP CORN
Gourmet pop corn for less than the fanciest you may in stores!
Pop corn can be popped dry, without any oil. All you need as "special
equipment" is a kettle with a tight fitting lid, to hold the steam in. I
just cover the bottom of the kettle with a layer of kernels, close the lid,
place on the element, which I set at "medium". I walk away and keep an ear
opened for the pops. When the pops are too far apart (if I can count 4
seconds apart), I immediately pour the popped corns into a large container,
splash some good oil onto them, close the lid, and shake vigorously.
So far, my favorite oil for it, because it is subtle in taste, is sunflower.
Second choice is safflower oil.
Then I quickly add my seasonings while it's still warm, and shake again.
The seasonings can be brought pre-mixed in a reseable plastic bag, to save
space.
My favorite combos:
.SUBTLE: black pepper, oregano, sea salt.
.TNT: black pepper, cayenne pepper, paprika, sea salt. optionnal: a few
drops of tabasco, but do not inhale too close to the bowl when you eat. you
have been warned!
.BBQ: garlic powder, sea salt, black pepper, cayenne pepper, touch of sugar

MIXED BEANS
Great as an extra in a salad. It's available in cans or in glass jars.
Get the type that has its own vinegar-based juice, it serves as a great
dressing for the salad, or in addition to the dressing of your choice.

GREEN SUPPLEMENTS
For ultimate health without having to bring multiple baskets of fresh
organic veggies, one way is to use green supplements. They are available in
powder form or in caplets. I prefer the powder, because I love the taste of
the greens. Just add to a glass-size container, add lid, and shake
vigorously. Drink quickly. It's great as a first drink in the morning. My
favorite brand, which helped turn my health around a few years ago, is
Perfect Food, and the brand is Garden of Life (USA).
It's harder and harder to get it in health foo stores around here, for some
reason.
In Canada, we have a brand called Greens+, and I like it for taste, although
I'm not sure the effect is as good as the other brand.
In addition to greens, the only supplement I take is coral calcium, which
does make a big difference compared to the usual type of drugstore calcium.

JUICE BARS
I know that puppet tours usually bring us away from everything "hip",
because we stay in highway motels, since they are more affordable. Still,
when you happen upon a Juice Bar, treat yourself to something fresh that
will boost you for a while. Veggie juices are best for overall effect. Avoid
the more acidic fruit juice mixes, especially if they contain high
proportions of strawberries. They can do a number on your stomach,
especially if you are already hungry.
Juice bars can usually be found in hip downtown areas, in certain malls,
food courts in big train and bus stations, and within certain vegetarian and
vegan restaurants.
The last one I tried was "Jugo Juice", inside the train station in Toronto.
Very good carrot-beet juice!
The wrap I got was so-so (too dry, not one flavor standing out).
