Subject: [Puptcrit] Toy Theatre: primitive approach

Hi Mathieu

Have you considered glove puppets.

When I first started in puppetry I was introduced to it by a lady
called Nancy Henry. She had a puppet theatre which broke down flat for
easy carrying. It set up on a table in minutes, with a cloth draped
across the front to hide your knees. You operated the show looking
through a scrim type scene. It all packed into a light carrying bag.
It had front curtains and two small electric lights which clamped on
the front of the playboard. She did not own any of her own transport.
She used to travel all over the world by air, bus and train giving
talks and shows. She also wrote books. The plays themselves seem
pretty naff nowadays but I originally had a replica of her theatre and
gave my first public performance with it in 1942 for 200 children at a
Christmas party. I was paid half a guinea, a lot of money in those
days, and a lifetime in puppetry went from that moment until I retired
in 1999.

Regards

John Dudley
