It is possible that the Joanne's magnets could be rare-earth magnets.
If so, be careful not to hit them or drop them, those magnets are very 
fragile.
Specialized stores sell some metal cups that fit the rare earth magnets.
Those actually increase the magnetic strenght of the magnets, while 
protecting them.

In the case of the knock-offs, maybe if you tape their edges, it would be 
enough added protection.
