Subject: [Puptcrit] A Defining Term

I always think of science fiction writing when this subject comes up.
Although much brilliant writing and many great novels have been written
within this field it still suffers from a perception that it's a geekish and
immature form compared to 'serious' writing. There are plenty of serious
sci-fi writers who hate the title because it makes it harder for their work
to be reviewed seriously.

Puppetry has some similar baggage. It's often seen as appealing only to a
small section of an imagined theatre audience (children, puppet-geeks) and
to be considered 'seriously' it looks to give itself another name. Puppetry
is a form of theatre, just as science fiction is a form of writing, and both
should be judged on the merits of the individual production with no special
pleadings either way. But of course in both cases it's all about
preconceptions, and unfortunately pre-conceptions matter.
