Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Coraline on NPR

Saw Coraline last night. Spectacular sets and amazing, ground-breaking stop-motion, all done without distracting the viewer from the story. Loved it.

But I have a tiny nitpick: the stop-motion is SO perfect, it might as well be CGI. In the NPR article, Henry Selick says "Stop-motion is sort of twitchy; you can feel the life in it. If we were to remove that completely, there'd be no point in it." Exactly. There wasn't quite enough twitch in this puppetry, for my taste.

Does anyone remember the British stop-motion TV series, Wind In the Willows? Stop-motion was less evolved then, but the intricacy and beauty of the WITW's sets and puppets rival Coraline. And in WITW, that cute little herky jerky style of movement adds an appropriately silly dimension to the characters. Oh, HOW I loved WITW!

Oh, one other nitpick: what's with Wyborn? I don't remember him being in the book. Is he there to make the movie more appealing to boys?

Regards,
Diane
