Subject: [Puptcrit] Coraline and the cat

In the movie, when Coraline first meets the cat, the cat seems a bit feral, but that soon shifts to wary, and finally the cat fills a role not unlike Jimminy Cricket did in Disney's Pinocchio. The cat was an advisor. The cat moved back and forth between Coraline's two worlds, rather than having an "other cat" in the "other world"---the big difference was that in the "other world" the cat could speak, while in "the real world" the cat could nod but not speak.
(one of the neat subtleties of the film). But in both worlds, the cat was a valuable advisor to Coraline.

I like critters too. Especially cat critters---I like their independence, and the puppet cat had an independent streak.

For several years I was a friend of a semi-feral street cat which would finally let me pick her up, but only briefly. I thought about her while watching the movie.

Alan
