Don't want the Trunk Fibre question to be answer to all marionette joint questions, but since I never had a large quantitiy of the stuff, I've created hundreds of marionette joints with an alternative mathod and material....readily availble and stronger.

I find streel strapping lengths usually discarded at construciton sites. I cut them into small lengths...about 2 inches long, and drill a 1/16 inch hole near the end of each piece...only on one end, and trim the strapping to be 3/8 inch wide. Then I cut a coping or band saw width, slot in the relatively stationary piece of a two piece joint....knee, elbow, etc. and cut a wider slot in th mathing part, the lower leg the lower arm, etc. These cuts are in the same direction as rotation. Then I fit the hole for axle (a 2 p nail usually) in the end of the strapping with the hole, so that the second part of the assembly (lower arm or leg) freely rotates, then I fit the strap assembly (with rotating part) to the upper part, so that it fits nicely, but rotates freely, and fix the upper part of the strap to the slot previously cut. To fix the strap in place, I drill two holes through that part of the assembly (to hold it in place), cut off the nails or bend
them in place, and the assembly is finished. By cutting the steapping to be completely inside the two carved or sculpted pieces that make the joint, be it knee or elbow, you make a completely invisible joint. You can restrict movement, by adding an additional nail in the lower part to restrict the degree of rotation. And I can complete several joints in a matter of minutes, with pre-made strsps and holes predrilled. Does this make sense? I have these joints displayed in photos on my web site: www.Jimgamble.com Happy Puppeteering, Jim Gamble
