Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Paper casting contacts?

I have used Cementex L200 for years. L200 is used for casting flexible
rubber heads and masks. No. 64 filler makes it less pliable. The more you add the
less flexible the rubber becomes, and more solid plastic-like. I don't have a
lot of experience with the filler, but L200 rubber from Cementex is a basic
casting rubber. This is not to be confused with L200 foam.

Casting rubber can be tinted with acrylic paints to achieve a skin-tone
base. It is a wonderful material to work with. Bil Baird pioneered casting rubber
puppets and worked with Cementex on perfecting the formula. I have some
rubber puppets of Baird's that are surely over 40 years old that are in perfect
condition except for some darkening of the color. I have had other rubber
puppets deteriorate after a few years. I cannot determine why some last and
others do not, but using the rubber when it is fresh seems to make a big
difference. So .... Greg, don't leave that stuff on the shelf, cast something soon!

Durability is an important factor for my puppets. They tour a lot, are
packed and unpacked, are exposed to variations in temperature and humidity, and
get a nice workout when they perform. I try to build them to last forever.
Robert, what is the durability of casts with the filler?

All this talk about papier mache vs. neoprene. Hardly anyone ever mentions
the affordable line of casting products from the Cementex Co. I've brought
it up before, but no one seems to follow my suggestion. I even offered to
send Mathieu a batch but he declined and instead tried to invent his own.

I've been using the stuff for 25 years - a mixture of L200 and No. 64
filler. I discovered it in a brochure about the props department of the
Metropolitan Opera in NY. It's durable, it's long lasting and it's a
fraction of the cost of neoprene.

This is the last I'm going to write about it.
