Good photos are definitely worth the money. We generally use a photographer who shoots a lot of theater shows. Going with this type of photographer helps, I think, because they are used to catching the dynamics of a performance shot, even when it is a posed shot. If you have a good working relationship with the photographer there is a give and take which results in better shots. Of course, the more you know about what you are looking for in a shot, the better off you are.

Here's some things to keep in mind. Take several shots of the same thing as some puppet's focus will be off center or something. Try to vary the format - horizontal and vertical - as you may want to use them in different ways at different times. Consider some specific use photos. If you intend to create a brochure, think about the lay out in advance and see if you can plan a few shots to enhance specific aspects. Also, if you are setting up a photo you intend to use for a post card, you may want to allow space for your logo to be photo shopped in. There is a fine balance between enough leeway to be useful in various ways, and too general to be useful. A good photographer will help you achieve this balance.
