In addition to Lincoln, Disney also produced The Carousel of Progress for GE and It's a Small World for Pepsi, also employing animatronics for the NY World's Fair, all of which moved to the Disney theme parks after the fair. Bil created a puppet show for the Chrysler Pavilion, that had four revolving stages on a large drum that played to four auditoriums simultaneously. In his book he refers to resisting becoming a slave to this machine, which may be what you are recalling. (see page 220 of The Art of the Puppet.) My astonishment with the clip on YouTube is that Disney actually employed footage of Bil Baird's puppets to illustrate their narrative--very surprising and it makes me wonder if they had the rights. Disney is so protective of their own material. It is also of note that they acknowledge marionettes as having a role in the development of animatronics. I doubt Disney was inspired by Baird, but thought the subject line with the question mark would spark some discussion and curiosity to see the clip. -Steven-> In a message dated 3/7/2009 6:02:53 P.M. I have a vague recollection of a story about Bil Baird being asked to create a machine to present puppet shows. Bil declined and then was asked to produce a puppet show for the event. That might have been for the Chrysler Pavilion at the 1964/65 World's Fair. Disney produced "Great Moments with Mr. Lincoln", their first animatronics show, for the Illinois Pavilion for that world's fair. Does that ring a bell with anyone else? I am astounded to come across this short clip on YouTube about Disney Imagineering which includes a shot referencing Bil Baird's marionettes as the inspiration for animatronics.
