Subject: [Puptcrit] Delta swallowed NWA (burp)

Jim's negative report of Delta is NOT reassuring---especially considering the repeat difficulties and lack of accountability I personally experienced when flying Northwest to the Twin Cities Puppet fest two years ago. I had flights cancelled, there was a line of 75 people ahead of me before I could get an alternate flight---then as the clerk said "here's your new ticket & by the way your flight just left," I was ready to murder anyone from NWA. I waited 10 hours to get out of LAX. On NPR brioadcasts in Minneapolis there were horror stores from other NWA passengers including an entire bridal party that failed to arrive in time for a fancy wedding. NWA bigwigs were countig on a forgetful client base. And I had to pay for excess luggage on my return trip ($25 rather than Jim's $2000.).

If I'd carried the damn book as readng material I'd have saved that money.

So now one problem carrier has absorbed a disastrous airline and I don't know if they will try to correct past problems. I can see why those able to drive might prefer that option.

But last night driving home from Orange County, an access ramp to the 605 Freeway was closed. At first there were detour signs two miles beyond the Freeway, but none that got me back on the freeway, so I drove the whole way from Long Beach to Altadena by surface streets at a maximum speed of 40 mph or less after a useless detour that took me 4 miles out of the way.

So even alternatives are not always ideal. And there are no flights from Altadena to Costa Mesa anyway.

The irony is that in olden days puppeteers could get places quicker before we had freeways. We thought nothing of zipping down to Laguna Beach for a Los Angeles Guild of Puoppetry Meeting---now it can take 2 hours to get to Santa Monica.

Who says you can't stop progress?

Grrrr.
