Mathieu is absolutely right!

All important files should be backed up on hard media. It's cheap  
enough and the media is readily available. I also recommend disk  
imaging as a form of data backup. If a problem arises you can access  
the most recent disk image and reload your entire hard drive back to  
the point before you had a problem. "Time Machine" is a fantastic  
program for disk imaging on a mac. It's also automatic.
