Exactly what I needed to know. I'm guessing that my author isn't going to retire because of me! Thanks! Nancy

Hi!

Finally someone asked a question that I can answer!!

The Dramatists Guild minimum contracts apply to situations very
different from those that most puppeteers work in, and, even then,
except for Broadway shows and shows in major regional theaters, the
Dramatists Guild allows a lot of flexibility. Frequently, I'll make an
arrangement with a small producing organization (you, for example!) that
I'll get 5% of the ticket sales (or equivalent), which can be a lot if
the show does well, and next to nothing if the show does poorly.
Essentially, you need to contact the playwright (preferably directly,
since agents can be difficult to deal with) and negotiate a deal. Most
playwrights want their work to be seen, and so are more than willing to
take into consideration the actual circumstances of the production in
setting a fee.

And yes, there should always be a written agreement (the playwright will
usually provide this). More often than not, the playwright will simply
take your word as to the number of performances--but if the playwright
is a Dramatists Guild member, the Guild will go after you in a serious
way if it turns out you weren't honest. And the money is transferred by
your writing a check and mailing it to the playwright.

So the big step is simply to get the playwright's contact information.
The internet can be useful. If the playwright is a Dramatists Guild
member (you can find out by phoning or writing the Guild), the Guild
will provide contact info.

If you have any questions about any of this, just ask! I love having
the chance to be helpful!

Best,

Spence
