Friday night I saw AIN'T MISBEHAVIN' in Los Angeles (the official opening night, after "preview performances" had ended). Two of the ladies had ample proportions and could not pass for teenagers, but they could run circles around the average teenager. So even though it was not a puppet show, not-so-young-puppeteers might feel encouraged by a top-notch performance by Eugene Barry-Hill (who appeared in the original cast of "Lion King", Doug Eskew, Armelia McQueen (who also was in the original Broadway cast of this show 30 years ago!) Roz Ryan, and the youngest cast member Debra Walton. If you live in or near Los Angeles, this production is an important thing to see. Friday's Los Angeles Times Calendar Section had an informative article on the philosophy behind this show, and just why it works so well. The cast did not just sing old songs. They also danced, moved beautifully----EVERYTHING is choreographed in the most marvelous way---- they bantered and flirted. This time, you get a bargain in talent, whatever the price of the ticket. I heard lots of bravos, spontaneous aplause, even a fragment of audience participation. So the standing ovation at the conclusion was the proper response.
