While I'm sure the drivers, housekeepers and carpenters are paid, those 
functions are their full-time jobs. An artist performing at the White House is 
one day out of the artist's life (maybe 2 days for transportation). And 
unless the residents of the White House pay out-of-pocket, tax payer dollars 
would be paying the artists' fees, which would potentially raise a big stink 
and add more fuel to the fires of right wing talk radio. Plus, any artists 
invited to perform for free at the White House can always decline.
