Part of it probably comes from the fact that mass produced puppets and stuffed animals are so cheap and people don't understand the difference between mass production and hand making something.
The fact is that factory made puppets design costs are distributed over a huge number of units. The costs of materials and labor and production also stay way down because of the economies of scale not available for a small custom job.
