But... The most exciting "animated" heads that I have seen are those that have no moving parts - but are rather animated the way in which they are sculpted. A turn of the head changes the expression - or the way in which the puppet is lit.....etc. The most recent example of something I saw that was like this was Steven Barr's Faust marionettes (movie). Manipulation and design seems to be able to make an inanimate object very much "alive" with an unlimited (perhaps) capacity for facial movements to be perceived.
