There are many local Guild members who no matter how?many times we?suggest that they join the P of A for some reason??don't, or won't ?but we certainly?can't tell people they must be a member or they can't join the Guild.??We would lose many members. I will however continue as the editor of the newsletter for the Chicago Guild promote membership in every issue. Now as the person who opened this can of worms. Please understand that?I never meant to imply that people must join puppetry organizations. Some of these people who won't join happen to be close friends of mine. ?I said it bother me that people for what ever reason don't want to participate. However after some sage advice form people I respect I have modified my thought on the subject. -----Original Message----- From: Alan Cook <alangregorycook-AT-msn.com> To: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Sent: Mon, 25 May 2009 2:18 am Subject: [Puptcrit] Puppetry Organizations Message from Charles Taylor---Part I ________________________________________ Enthusiasm for an organization does not obligate another's participation. That is a slippery slope than can alienate many professionals. By that, I mean those that are accomplished and/or earning a living at puppetry. But no one should be obligated. If they have something you want, why should they be expected to GIVE it! Try that with a plumber, electrician, contractor, doctor or dentist. I for one am very enthusiastic about belonging to Puppeteers of America. I see one of the weaknesses of our local organizations is that it is not required to belong to PofA, if a member wishes to be just a member of a local guild. In some ways I see this as a detriment to the parent organization. As a teacher, I was required to belong to a local, state, and national organization. It was my primary profession. The dues were automatically taken out of my salary and it was a large monthly amount. I do NOT see that as a possibility in the Puppeteers of America. But it seems to me that more effort should be made at the local level to convince members of the value of belonging to PofA. I would even DARE to suggest that local guilds think about making membership in both organizations a requirement of membership. It would help a good deal in bringing UP the quality of membership. I profess ignrance if that has already been tried in the Puppeteers of America. _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Admin interface: http://lists.puptcrit.org/mailman/listinfo/puptcrit Archives: http://www.driftline.org _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Admin interface: http://lists.puptcrit.org/mailman/listinfo/puptcrit Archives: http://www.driftline.org
