I too saw a show where they used incense.
but it was sosubtle, no one could be offended or incomodated.

I think every venue smells different, and that gets added to what effects 
are used (even the lights) and what people show up.

The most horrible olfactive attack in public that I'm ever subjected to is 
when I am forced to walk through a department store's perfume section. It's 
horrid, I lose my voice and my eyes water.
The second strongest such attack is when on public transportation in the 
morning, standing in the same wagon as someone wearing LOTS of perfume (they 
think it will last longer for the day, that way).   These people, like 
smokers, have absolutely no respect for other citizen's right to breathe.
No one in the train says a word, even though lots look very bothered, 
because in today's society, you mind your own business in public, or else. I 
am lucky to not have been subjected to it in a while, but next time it 
happens, I'm letting my big mouth express itself.
