Subject: [Puptcrit] Performance mishaps

The "most unusual places to perform" thread seems to have evolved into a
new thread about injuries, mishaps, embarrassments and laughable moments.
So...

Years ago, we performed our version of "Beauty and the Beast" at an outdoor
stage, in a park, in the height of summer. We were two costumed
puppeteer/actors in full view of the audience, operating three to four foot tall
marionettes, which required both hands to properly manipulate.

Because it was midday, hot and humid, and because I'm vain, I carefully
styled my hair and used a LOT of hairspray to keep my coiffure gorgeous and
fluffy for the show.

Yellowjackets LOVE hairspray. Who knew? Midway through the show a swarm of
bees found me. In the spirit of "the show must go on" I plowed through the
heart wrenching scenes where Beauty declares her love for her dying Beast,
while simultaneously tossing my head, twitching, jerking, writhing, shrugging
my shoulders -- doing everything I could without using my hands (which were
otherwise engaged operating Beauty) to discourage the yellowjackets.

The audience, which had been completely engaged up to that point, began to
murmer and look perplexed. "Is she having a seizure?" "What's wrong with
that woman?"

We managed to stumble and bumble through to the end of the show somehow.
Lesson learned: don't use hairspray when performing outdoors in summer.

Linda
