We use mainly PAR 16's ("birdies") with 75w lamps; the black housing comes with a gel frame; you can buy clamps and even barn-doors extra. The lamps can be gotten in different spreads; obviously you don't have as much control as with a lensed instrument, but just between careful focus and using some black-wrap to cut down spill, it does quite a good job. We use these on a 10x8x8 stage (square aluminum tubing, bolted); our current show (THE TEMPEST) has about 20 PAR 16's, a few 3" Fresnels, and for stronger color washes two 500w Fresnels and several 300w PAR. Whole thing (since these aren't all up at the same time, runs off a 15-amp household circuit. Of course this is vast overkill for most shows, but I noticed that Lumen Coad uses six or eight PAR 16's for the pieces of his I've seen. Wish I could get a lensed instrument that was that small and cheap, but haven't found it yet. The better housings are about $50 each, not including the lamp, but you can find cheaper ones for about $20 - we just bought 5 at that price, and the gel frame holders are sticky, but they work ok.
