It keeps the sound quality at its best. I keep a copy of my show soundtrack on an ipod shuffle, the cheapest ipod model. I still prefer the CD player as I don't trust the ipod not to fail. My daughter's have all broken several ipods over the years (though they tended to break lots of things I manage not to break). I'd worry about having a full charge ready to go. Lots of folks are using ipods for their shows and seem to be happy with the results. You might want to invest in a backup ipod shuffle. (though the remote won't work on a shuffle) Its good to have something to fall back on.
