In January/February we had an intern from a program at Bennington College, and he was a godsend. No, we didn't pay -- we couldn't remotely afford it -- though he got college credit for it. But we were both very happy with the experience. We discussed at length, in advance, what he'd be doing, gave him a huge amount of variety and responsibility, and did our best to talk with him about what was happening, in terms of style & process, in relation to his own particular interest in music drama. I think it's absolutely vital to give equal value and regard other people's time as a precious commodity. Often, indeed, that's not done; and there are occasions where you can't do it because of the demands on your own time. But you need to be up front about that, and then if the kid is happy just to sit watching the master at work or going out for his coffee, that's the kid's choice. As to the question of rich vs. poor: so nu? Rich kids can afford all kinds of stuff that are beyond other people's means, like starting avant-garde theatre companies, graduating from conservatories without staggering debt, etc. etc. Or for that matter, having birthday parties that can hire lotsa you puppeteers. I never had any bloomin' puppeteers at my birthday parties. Now I think of it, I never had any parties. Except one I remember when I was four and I went off to cry in a corner because we played a game and I didn't win. Anyway, peace & joy- Conrad B. _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Admin interface: http://lists.puptcrit.org/mailman/listinfo/puptcrit Archives: http://www.driftline.org
