Joe, 'poix' which Mathieu describes is resin. Traditional companies still
use it. The spores you are thinking of are lycopodium - quite different.
Harry Tozer described the resin method used by the Catalan puppets which was
published with a diagram in Paul McPharlin's Yearbook 1934 and later
reproduced in my book 'The Marionettes of Barcelona'.

I think what you are referring to is a type of mushroom spore that is 
available in powder form and is blown over the flame.  I have read 
that powdered coffee creamer is a good substitute.
