Hobey, you mentioned "caring human civilization." There lies the problem.
Basically, we are a selfish, self-centered people. I have read statistics
(you won't hear this on Glen Beck) that show that America gives far less to
charities around the world than most other western countries. Before you
people way over to the right start to scream, I didn't say America doesn't
give aid to other countries. Just check for yourselves the percentage of our
GDP going to charity compared to other western countries, and we are at the
bottom of yet another list. We are by far the richest country on the
planet, yet we give the least (percentage wise), We also show far less concern
for our less fortunate. We talk the talk but we don't walk the walk.

Many years ago, I performed a skit with Mark Levenson at a puppet festival
(actually at several festivals) called "Fetal Jeopardy." The Final Fetal
Jeopardy Answer was, "From Conception To Birth." The answer was, "What is
the only period of your life that the U.S. Supreme Court is concerned with?"
Sadly, with Scalia, Thomas, Alito & Roberts, that is more true than ever.
After birth, you are supposed to pull yourselves up by your own
bootstraps. If some republicans had their way, there would be no public education.
If you can't make it on your own, you're on your own, baby!
