As media has permeated every aspect of our society, it has become difficult to find any place that doesn't have a video screen, including restrooms and taxicabs, As the video experience degrades toward the banality of elevator music blending into societal background noise, the experience of live performance grows more precious. Some of the Broadway shows I have seen recently have been astonishing, with high tech lighting effects, split second timing, remarkable sets and set changes supporting stellar performances by gifted talents. I have come to believe that Broadway tickets are worth every penny, perhaps more than the already high prices they command. While I regret that high ticket prices make it unaffordable to many, I have come to believe that live performance is under-appreciated and undervalued. -Steven-> In a message dated 11/7/2009 8:51:37 A.M. How high will ticket prices have to be to pay for such indulgence? Recently, a revival of Neil Simon's Brighton Beach Memoirs closed on Broadway after only a week of performances. Apparently, the general public just did not want to see it. The production cost 3 milluion dollars. Now the producers are in a hole. Interestingly, the original production cost only $150,000.00 & earned 8 million. Ticket prices for Broadway shows are so outlandishly expensive that attending the theater (on Broadway anyway) has become a once in a blue moon experience, or something special for tourists to do while on vacation. So budgeting 52 million dollars for Spiderman will only make the situation worse.
