Subject: [Puptcrit] Shadow scripts

Friends-

i received an inquiry from a high school teacher, asking for
recommendations about scripts specifically for shadow puppets. I
offered some suggestions about creating their own, and to try
googling, and to have her students look at Web videos, but also said
I'd post her request on Puptcrit.

Not sure precisely what she's looking for, but she sent this
information:

>>>These are International Baccalaureate (IB) students working on
>>>their independent research investigation of an unfamiliar theatre
>>>tradition. IB requires them to select a play/piece of theatre
>>>appropriate to the chosen practice; then, they formulate a
>>>question to focus their research that will inform a theatre
>>>practitioner desiring to produce the piece. Example: An actor is
>>>playing the Monkey King in a Kathakali production of a story from
>>>the Ramayana. The dramaturg (the student) provides info to the
>>>actor on how this role is performed in this particular theatre
>>>practice.
>>>It is challenging for these students. They might like to adapt a
>>>story on their own after they complete this project.
>>>Even director's notes or a copy of a promptbook of a shadow
>>>production would work for this assignment. This is the first time
>>>I have had students select this tradition.

I can forward any notes that you might offer - reply on- or
off-list. Or if you think you might help and are willing to have her
contact you, let me know. Pretty nice, I think, that high school
kids are getting interested in this stuff. I guess this inquiry came
from someone who saw our TEMPEST.

Peace & joy-
Conrad
