Hi Trish

I have made lots of puppets this way and the fastest most durable method I
have found is to use celuclay to sculpt the head then just paint it.

You will need to put on a thin base coat of celucaly to help the shaped
layer stick. Kind of like spreading peanut butter you mush it in with one
finger and let it dry then the next layer will stick very well. I use a bead
for the eyes which I imbed in the clay.

If you put a dowel into the head first you can then put it in a base to make
the sculpting easier this work whether you make a rod puppet or a hand
puppet.

You can cover the clay with a layer of thin paper if you like to add
durability but it is not necessary. I have had kids make thousands (not an
exaggeration) of these puppets and never had more than an ear break off when
it was dropped.

Good luck

Subject: [Puptcrit] Papier Mache

Hello all! I have just been hired to create a set of Punch and Judy puppets
for a high school Madrigal Dinner that students will perform. I'm going to
make them out of paper mache, no clay/plaster negative because there isn't
time, and I wanted input as to what paper type to use? I've heard brown
paper sacks are great and also red rosin paper. Any ideas? I'm sculpting
them around Styrofoam eggs. This needs to be quick and fairly easy which is
why I'm doing the paper mache. The production is only on 1 weekend, but I
still want them to be somewhat durable. Thanks!
