you are basically talking about a scrim. your stage needs to be light tight 
and you need to have front lights to make it (the scrim)  opaque. Go to a 
fabric store and hold a piece of material to the light...if you can pretty 
much see through it - it should work as long as there is good light coming 
from the front of your stage.
