I think you hit the nail on the head.  The first step is respecting children as actual human beings, something some people never get (but we won't go there).  Also good are a sense of fun and belief in magic.

Honestly it seems to be one of those things that people think you are or you aren't.
I have been told for ages that I was "great with kids" and all I did wasn't talk down to them and treat them like people rather than babies.
Sometimes it is as simple as that you listen to the kids and they know that you heard them which can be unusual for them.
Now that I am a Mom, my "great with kids" is now an assumed since I have kids.
