Subject: [Puptcrit] Query: Frank and Elizabeth Haines

Dear Puptcrit Colleagues,
This spring the Ballard Institute and Museum of Puppetry will mount an exhibit devoted to the work of Frank and Elizabeth Haines, who were active puppeteers in the Philadelphia area in the 1930s. My student assistant Zachery Dorn is curating this exhibition. In addition to presenting a wide variety of marionettes from the Haines Collection (which we received from the Smithsonian's Cooper-Hewitt Museum), we want to contextualize their 1930s work by including all sorts of stages, technical devices, scripts, photos, and video re-enactments of scenes from their shows, all to explain what it was like to be a puppeteer in the U.S. during the Depression. We would appreciate any information or advice you might have about the Haines, puppetry in Philadelphia or the rest of the Northeast in the 1930s, or other relevant stuff.
  Thanks for your attention!
