And a huge difference it is, too. Like comparing apples and orangutangs. Just think of the root of tolerance: to tolerate, which, while it does mean to allow, or to respect the beliefs, practices, etc. of others without sharing them, more often than not it really means to put up with, or to resist the effects of something. Nowhere in there is even an implication of understanding. Inclusiveness, on the other hand... In Improv it's called the "Yes, and..." In puppetry I'm not sure what it's called, but it's there. Or it can be. But I do know that our business suffers from "tolerance" and the teaching there of. More to the point, I believe it is teaching intolerance in the name of tolerance. When you can't do or say things because others may not share the same beliefs, practices, etc., that is not tolerance, it is intolerance and it teaches that we must not allow an exposure to other thoughts unlike our own. It eliminates discussion and understanding of different beliefs, cultures, races, etc. and leads to a segregation of the mind, which is a sibling of ignorance, which leads to fear, which leads to name calling, which leads to hate, which leads to... Oh never mind. I'm going to do an old fashion Punch and Judy show complete with slapstick again one of these days. I'm going to put it on my future shows list right now.
