Subject: [Puptcrit] filmed puppets

It is time to mention again that the original motion pictures WERE SHADOW PUPPETS.

There is some kind of need in human beings to make pictures move, to animate inanimate objects. It is a form of play---and if puppies and kittens can play, so can we. It kind of gives a different meaning to a current word, "creationism". Artists of all sorts are creators.

Human actors are known as "players" and appear in "plays". Puppets appear in "plays" too. There is bound to be overlappngs---categories are conveniences, but not as hardbound as we might think. So I go for the broadest definition of puppetry. Puppetry has something in common with OPERA---it can have speech, dance, music, drama, comedy and more, all dumped into the same bowl and mixed around and stirred. With GRENDEL, Julie Taymor even mixed puppetry and opera together, along with a hell of a lot of technology which malfunctioned, thus delaying opening night in Los Angeles.
