Subject: Re: [Puptcrit] Theory: Talent Comes From AFAR

I have always held a place in my heart for my own theater where people
would come to me. I admire the efforts of those who manage to make it
happen, especially the smaller outfits who do it with little money. The
stoppers for me are first off the amount of constant new work it would
require. Then the need to be there all the time, then the numbers which are
pretty dismal. Then the eventual cutting corners to keep it up while
lowering quality and of course the possibility of being a birthday party
destination which is not my bag. I'm not saying that would be inevitable
but, I can't help thinking it would be so.

I travel about half the year coast to coast and that is out of necessity for
my region doesn't support me. I can count on one hand the number of local
shows I do in a year. I can relate to getting tired of travelling and yet I
find that it is SO nice on returning home, unpacking the puppets into my
shop shutting the door and leading a regular life doing the other things
that life offers. It refeshes me and inspires me and when I eventually
unlock the shop and begin creating I have energy for it. And then when I go
on tour it is a nice change. Touring can be grueling, but it is called
"work" and a good part of the time it is pleasant enough.

But again hats off to those who create local puppet theaters and centers.
If you are inspired to make one yourself then go for it and good luck! I
hope you suceed.
