That would have avoided the publication of inevitable mistakes and omissions. As far as I know, profit was never a motive or even dream for UNIMA, but publishers hesitated to lose money. One publisher in France offered free publication but was rejected. Funding for a publishing house were obtained in France hence the first edition is in French. I am uncertain of the present agreement, but I suspect UNIMA won't receive anything but some free copies. As for omissions, comprehensive encyclopedias deal with priorities more of what not to include than vice versa. See how heavy it already is! Hans Purschke, primary mover for an encyclopedia as far back as the 1970's, circulated a list of various categories including individuals most important from an international perspective (international touring, publications, advocating and forwarding puppetry through centers, exhibitions, festivals, etc.) The list was submitted by the publication commission to national centers for additions or objections before the final decisions by the editors. Many not listed as individual entries are included in national articles. Primary sources could not be online without royalty considerations. I think an editorial board would be the solution for an archival web site. Maybe it should just include contacts for various archivists and contents of their collections. The archivists should not duplicate the process of digitalization. Many of us have the same stuff as do publication sites, i.e. The NY Times, The Drama Review, etc. _______________________________________________ List address: puptcrit-AT-puptcrit.org Admin interface: http://lists.puptcrit.org/mailman/listinfo/puptcrit Archives: http://www.driftline.org
