Robert,

   Light-hearted, eh? It's not exactly whimsy but a lot of the short adult
stories of Roald Dahl have a real nasty sense of humour, and some only
feature a few charactes. There's 'Sredni Vashtar' by Saki, which is an adult
look at childhood and childhood's Gods...actually, a lot of Saki's stories
can be pretty amusing, though I'm not sure if they all acream adaptation by
puppet theatre.
