Generally, the glossier the finish, the harder it is.  Even when  
finishing floors, it is common to put down two coats of a high gloss  
finish and one matt for the final coat.  You might try using a  
combination of gloss and mat finishes.  Also,  the water based paints  
that you get at a craft store are not the best quality.  Since you use  
primary colors and mix it yourself, it might be better to by water  
based good quality house paint in quarts.
