Subject: [Puptcrit] Before a show

Belt fastened? zipper up, shoes tied and on the correct feet. puppet
strings in order,
wires connected? props in place? brain on... power on ? I love what
we do so I feeeel goood.
I listen to the excited voices and share in their enthusiasm, because
I also enjoy a good puppet show. Thanks to All of you.
NO... I really Do. Someone said Breathing, yes breathing is good.
one of my favorite things. And stretching IS very important.
sometimes I hear someone singing one of my songs from last year,
and yes ... I smile, only briefly because I know everything could just
as easily be going wrong right now.
or a minute from now, so I check the cue cards one more time, and am
reminded of our many successes. and I relax.
I am usually singing a song softly repeating gently over and over to
my self , which has nothing to do with the show,
as I slowly pace back and forth backstage like a caged animal, No i
mean a person in deep thought.
Images flash before my mind, ...
doing puppet skits with my many siblings 50 yrs ago,
Mom at the sewing machine helping me to make a silk lined cape for my
1st marionette.
My father and I singing Gilbert and Sullivan, with original characters,
Proudly remembering My wife and performing partner, Jul, missing from
our familiar backstage.
I also arrive early enough to do all this,.
When I am well rehearsed there is no stage-fright at all.
That being said, Premieres, and problem venues do add tension.
So right before I address the audience, I have a big laugh ... at
myself.
